In a surprising move, Microsoft has announced the official confirmation of the Windows 10 October 2021 update. At a time when Windows 11 announcement along with its succeeding Insider Build updates are dominating the headlines in the tech sphere, not many would have anticipated the news about Windows 10 version 21H2 coming out later this year!
While the company claims excitement about ushering in the new era of Windows with advanced Windows 11 features, at the same time it remains focused on delivering constant support for the currently active 1.3 billion Windows 10 devices across the globe.
In an official statement, John Cable, Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, says that “Windows 10, version 21H2 will have a scoped set of features focused on productivity and security, prioritized to meet our customers’ needs based on feedback”.
Some of the marked features of Windows 10 21H2 include the following:
- Adding WPA3 H2E standards support for enhanced Wi-Fi security
- Windows Hello for Business supports simplified passwordless deployment models for achieving a deploy-to-run state within a few minutes
- GPU compute support in the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Azure IoT Edge for Linux on Windows (EFLOW) deployments for machine learning and other compute intensive workflows
Windows 10 21H2 Improves On Version 2004:
Proceeding Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 10 version 21H1, the upcoming 21H2 update builds on the foundation laid out in the v2004. This means the last four major versions are consist of the same underlying operating system at their core in addition to the similar group of system files. The rationale behind sharing the same code across multiple releases makes sense considering it saves time when updating devices to this new Windows 10 version 21H2 from any previous version issued after May 2020.
The official public version release process will commence later this year in earnest. Furthermore, Microsoft promises to offer 18 months of support for the Home and Pro edition users and 30 months of servicing for Education and Enterprise editions.
Windows 10 October 2021 Update Insider Builds Release:
Although the Windows maker is hard at work sprucing up the Windows 10 v21H2 for several months, the progress remained shrouded in mystery. Up until now. Microsoft makes known that starting from 15 July 2021, the 21H2 builds will begin rolling out to Windows Insiders, many of whom were shifted to the Release Preview channel from the normal Beta channel due to their devices failing to fulfill Windows 11 hardware requirements.
To clarity, Cable said, “This enables them to instead experience the latest innovations and enhancements in Windows 10.”
The public release of Windows 10 21H2 is slated for the second half of this year, which corresponds with the Windows 11 public release to everyone outside of developer channels.
