Diablo Immortal mobile game unlocks another achievement after hitting the ten million+ players mark not long after its global release. However, much of the discussion on Diablo Immortal is predominantly centering around the game’s rapacious monetization system rather than its merits in terms of gameplay. Incessant and costly microtransactions have given rise to so much concern among players that even a simulator has surfaced online, allowing you to simulate how many $25 pulls one needs to unlock a single 5/5 star gem for your character, which could end up in the range of thousands of dollars for those not cautious enough to monitor their spending on in-app purchases.
That said, the game is still managing to pull a large swathe of players, according to VGC, which defies commonsense given the game has earned an unenviable status of the worst-rated PC game in Metacritic history. Daily, the game is raking up a USD 1 million figure. What’s more, the game has reached a download count of over five million on the Google Play Store, as per the AppMagic website.
Notably, the above-mentioned $1 million revenue on a daily basis represents a 50% decline in daily value. For instance, the MMORPG was bringing in about $2.4 million daily during its launch week. Despite the pricing controversy, as this Reddit threat states, which highlights a stat that costs around $40,000 to maximize, money flow remains unhindered.
In the past, director Wyatt Cheng rebutted the grumblings by casting objections about microtransactions as “misinformation,” as you can see in the following tweet.

I don’t like it if information is misleading. There’s a difference between players liking or not liking a game based on it’s merits (which I can accept, not every game is for everybody) vs. liking or not liking a game based on misinformation surrounding it.

So far, there’s no organized protest calling for a price reduction. But we know the longer Blizzard allows this situation to linger, the faster it could alienate players, including the longtime fans of the series who would simply stop playing. To stymie the mass exodus of enthusiasts, which would translate into a sizable dip in revenue together with reputational damage, the game studio would do well to take definitive actions to quell the fuss at the earliest.
