It seems Instagram is mounting a challenge to the hegemony of the world’s number one video sharing platform YouTube. Their new application called IGTV is out now. This app allows content creators and creatives to share long-form videos in high-quality vertical format. The video sharing service app IGTV by Instagram is available to download for free. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, the parent company of Instagram, is of the view that videos are the future of social media and online interaction. This latest move by Instagram reflects that ideology by putting videos in the forefront of content creation and social media sharing.
IGTV is released as a standalone application for smartphones. The main Instagram app will also feature a dedicated tab to link videos posted on IGTV, so users can watch them without having to switch apps. The application is coming to both iOS and Android platforms within the next couple of days.
Instagram’s IGTV Application Can Be Downloaded From The Apple App Store And Google Play Store
The app was unveiled at an event held in San Francisco yesterday. IGTV is a new form of social media which is oriented towards bringing the “audiences closer to the creators they love.” Content creators will be able to share video as long as 1 hour.
There is no doubt that the IGTV app is launched in direct competition to YouTube. It is designed to allow creators share their work on the platform in the form of full-screen videos with the length of up to 1 hour. The IGTV app starts playing videos as soon as you open the app, so you won’t have to search for videos. However, you search videos using the discovery feature by swiping up on the app’s interface.
“Five years after the launch of video on Instagram, we are excited to introduce IGTV which brings audiences closer to the creators they love. We are re-envisioning mobile video with a new standalone surface that features longer videos and easy discoverability through channels, all in a vertical format that sits upright, in the palm of your hand.”
According to Instagram executives, the mobile video content will make up for 80 percent of the total mobile data traffic in the next three years. Another aspect highlighted during the launch event is that the young audience watches more amateur content.
The app’s main aim is to rival YouTube and Snapchat by offering users a new avenue to explore. Some of the main features of the app include:
- Simple and intuitive interface: The Apps starts as soon as you open it. There is no need to search or browse to get started. It’s designed in a way that facilitates multitasking.
- Mobile support: IGTV is developed specifically to run mobile devices; it runs full videos in vertical orientation.
- IGTV is curated to help you follow the work of your favorite Instagram creators in longer videos.
Facebook dabbled with the concept but failed to make its mark. It would be interesting to see whether Instagram could pull it off and truly establish itself as an effective YouTube alternative. Instagram is offering businesses, content creators, and virtually anybody to use the platform’s large user base to share their message and work.
