The Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, photos, and settings already have the dark mode feature. However, File Explorer only had the light theme until now, which left many wanting an option of a dark theme. Limited only to beta testing developers, the dark mode for file explorer is now open to public starting from Windows 10 Version 1809.

Make sure your device is running on Windows 10 Version 1809 (October 2018 update) or later.
1 – Open Windows Settings.
2 – Click on Personalization.
3 – Under Personalization, select Colors.
4 – Now scroll down to the bottom of the page and choose Dark under Choose your default app mode.
5 – Once this option is enabled, File Explorer and its menus will switch to a darker theme and shades.
The option to set dark theme through settings works only with certain elements within the operating system and a select few applications. For others, such as Microsoft Edge or the Office tools, you have to employ darker shades through their in-app settings. This surely requires a few extra steps, but it can be done nonetheless. In Microsoft Edge, go to Settings > Choose A Theme > Dark. To do the same with the Office Suite, head over to File > Options > General and select Black under Office Theme.
