As reported by The Verge, Epic Games CEO has confirmed that Fornite Battle Royale will not be available via the Play Store. The survivor game has taken the world by storm with its unique visuals and free to play gameplay style. Given its enormous success on PC and consoles, it was only a matter of time before it made its way to mobile platforms. It was first made available on iOS mobile platform via Apple App Store, and soon racked up millions in revenues. The Android version of Fornite was not available until now. Initially, the word out on the news waves indicated that it might release alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and would remain exclusive to it for 120 days after the phone’s launch. Another rumor suggested that the game will be distributed via the official website bypassing the Google Play Store channel. This is confirmed by Epic Games’ CEO Time Sweeney, that the game will be available via their website and not Google Play. Here is his official statement:
Epic wants to have a direct relationship with our customers on all platforms where that’s possible. The great thing about the internet and digital revolution is that this is possible, now that physical storefronts and middlemen distributors are no longer required.
Now why would Epic Games take such an action? Well, rather unsurprisingly, the main reason behind Fornite not being distributed via the Play Store has to do with financial matters. The developer doesn’t want to lose out on 30% revenue which would otherwise go to Google if the Play Store is used for the game’s distribution. It seems the prospect of losing 30% of all IAP revenue to Google isn’t finding currency among the Epic Games’ executives.
Fornite has already managed to draw over $1 billion in revenue for Epic Games across multiple platforms. It’s not that Apple doesn’t charge developers a fee for placing their apps on its app store, the main reason lays with the reality of Android itself. Android being an open source platform provides enough room for firms like Epic Games to play with the app and related services on its own terms. This freedom from Google’s terms & condition allows the creators of Fornite to tweak the gameplay experience in order to keep the players hooked to the game for a long time. Only downside to this approach involves missing out on the ease of discoverability associated with the Google Play Store.
Android being the biggest mobile platform on the planet is projected to shower millions of dollars in revenue from all over world via in-app purchases, thus 30 percent account for a significant amount of potential revenue loss in the end. Tim further added:
The 30 percent store tax is a high cost in a world where game developers’ 70 percent must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games…There’s a rationale for this on console where there’s enormous investment in hardware, often sold below cost, and marketing campaigns in broad partnership with publishers…30 percent is disproportionate to the cost of the services these stores perform, such as payment processing, download bandwidth, and customer service.
Fortnite APK For Android
From counterfeit standpoint, hosting the game on the official website makes sense, especially considering that the majority of the player base consists of the kids who won’t be able to tell the difference between a legitimate Fortnite APK and a fake one. Currently, there are several fake Fortnite APKs floating on the internet. The situation will only get worse once the official game makes its way to the platform. That said, CEO Tim isn’t too concerned about APK being hosted via multiple online sources because he is of the view that players are more knowledgeable about the safe online practices and, as evidence, adds that “gaming has thrived on the PC platform through many sources.” This is a reference to Steam, Battle dot net, etc. He further clarified that Android’s permission system will help protect players by informing them of what the app is allowed to do on their device.
