Google has finally released the latest Android 14 Developer Preview with all the new features and improvements to the Android operating system for mobile and tablet devices. Like last year, the search engine giant introduces the first preview build in February. The rollout comes as the company is already in the process of pushing Android 13 Quarterly Platform Releases, which makes work on the new developer preview even more commendable considering managing both projects simultaneously is no small feat.

Google Android 14 Developer Preview Brings Many New Enhancements

Let’s overview what’s new in this developer preview. In brief, there are five major enhancements worth mentioning.

The first significant improvement comes in the form of “working across devices and form factors“. Google is taking sizeable strides in upgrading existing features in Android 12L and Android 13 to better support tablets and foldable form factors”.

Moreover, the company is giving developers an easier gateway to design their apps for devices with all available form factors. This includes Cross Device SDK, which enables audio switching across devices.

The second main element relates to Customization, which should come as no surprise. Without delving into too many details, Google has restricted itself to only highlighting the ability to scale up the fonts up to 200%, a noticeable increase which a small segment of the userbase would surely benefit from.

The third critical feature pertains to Privacy and Security with a specific focus on ensuring that outdated and older applications with targetSdkVersion lower than 23 are blocked from installation.

Furthermore, the fourth Android 14 tentpole guarantees that the background work is streamlined. In the new OS, Google wants apps that are exempt from the clock or calendars category to ask the user permission before they are allowed to set alarms.

Moving on, here is what you need to know about Google API changes that are already functional:

In Android 14, we are making changes to existing Android APIs (Foreground Services and JobScheduler) including adding new functionality for user-initiated data transfers, along with an updated requirement to declare foreground service types. The user-initiated data transfer job will make managing user initiated downloads and uploads easier, particularly when they require constraints such as downloading on Wi-Fi only.

Also starting with Android 14, there is now an option to set language preferences specific to each app. This allows users to set their preferred language for an app without having to change the language for the whole operating system.

And lastly, App Compatibility gets OpenJDK 17 support on top of changes that make it easier to debug and test various app functions on different hardware. The former will add Java 17 language features in the upcoming developer preview builds, including features such as multi-line strings, record classes, and more.

Thanks to Google Play system updates (Project Mainline), over 600M devices are enabled to receive the latest Android Runtime (ART) updates that include these changes. This is part of our commitment to give apps a more consistent, secure environment across devices, and to deliver new features and capabilities to users independent of platform releases.

And when it comes to the question of when the platform will attain a stable state, Google is gearing up its efforts to make sure that the stability milestone is achieved by July, with the full and final release at some point in August.
